GERD Treatment Options at Tri-Rivers Healthcare
Everything You Need to Know About Treating GERD
Proton pump inhibitors or PPIs are the most common type of medication used for people suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease. Once only available by prescription, some PPIs such as Prevacid and Prilosec are now available over-the-counter, while others (e.g., Nexium) are still only available in prescription form.
PPIs (whether prescribed or purchased over-the-counter) decrease the amount of stomach acid and are used for treatment of GERD, stomach or intestinal ulcers, or other disorders of the digestive tract that result in excess production of stomach acid.

Anti-Reflux Surgery for GERD
Surgery can be effective in eliminating GERD by reinforcing the valve between your esophagus and stomach. Ask your physician if you are a candidate for anti-reflux surgery. A surgical option is usually indicated for patients with:
- a confirmed diagnosis of GERD by pH testing;
- endoscopic evidence of inflammation, irritation or swelling of the esophagus (esophagitis);
- or the presence of Barrett’s esophagus who are unable or unwilling to take medications for GERD or who wish to anatomically correct the root cause of their GERD.
